blackwidowThe first chapter of BRAZEN takes the reader to Korea’s Central Intelligence Agency where Jae Hwa is trying to break in to find the secret location of the Black Turtle Orb. There’s stealth, fighting, forbidden love, and heaps of action. This song reflects the mood and tone of chapter one.

Born for This by Mandisa

Throughout BRAZEN, Jae Hwa struggles with standing up to the dark god, and yet, she knows deep down inside that she’s the only hope the Koreans have to keep the darkness from overcoming the country.

board breakingThese lines of this song were very impactful when writing this book.

“There’s a time to hold your tongue, time keep your head down, there’s a time, but it’s not now. Sometimes you’ve got to go uninvited. Sometimes you’ve got to speak when you don’t have the floor. Sometimes you’ve got to move when everyone else says you should stay.”

Crystallize by Lindsey Stirling

This was the song playing when I wrote the scene that Jae Hwa meets the Black Turtle.

Here’s a snippet from BRAZEN:

“A breeze kicks up around me, swirling the snow and whispering in my ears. It’s a music I’ve never heard before. Wind and snow sing together in a breathless dance. Jagged mountains rise up around me as if the peaks ache for the stars. A crescent moon hangs above, lingering in the breaking dawn.”

Dying Soul by Antonio Pinto

This song really portrays the ache of the separation that Jae Hwa feels when she’s been torn away from Marc and her family. She is now a servant of the dark god and separated from them.

The final battle in BRAZEN is a culmination of everything that has been building in the three books. But then after a fierce battle, there’s always that stillness. It holds a mix of sadness and finality but there’s hope, too. And so it’s my hope that the final image my readers imagine is the sun setting on the Seoraksan Mountains with the feeling of hope for the future.

 About the book:

Jae Hwa Lee spent her sixteenth year in Seoul, trying to destroy the evil immortals who had been torturing her family for centuries. The last thing she expected was to be forced to become their assassin. Trapped in the darkest part of the Spirit World as a servant to the Korean god Kud, fighting to keep her humanity, and unable to contact her loved ones, Jae Hwa is slowly losing hope. Kud, god of darkness, will do anything to keep her as a pawn in his quest for power over all of Korea, her entire family thinks she’s dead, and Jae’s true love, Marc, believes she is lost to him forever.

When Kud sends Jae to find and steal the powerful Black Turtle orb, Jae sees an opportunity to break free and defeat Kud once and for all…but first she needs to regain Marc’s trust and work with him to vanquish the darkness that threatens to overwhelm Korea. There’s much to lose as Jae struggles to save the land she’s come to call home.
