Here to PUMP….You UP!
Okay, okay, okay–there are a lot of you who like to write to music. I understand why. The right song helps us get in the frame of mind we need to be in. Fast paced action scene? Maybe a little Ramones or Busta to speed things up. Slow gut wrenching deliberation happening in your story? Why, here’s Andy Suzuki or Dolly Parton to bring back feelings of fear and regret. Swoon worthy romance? Cue up Duke Ellington or Mozart.
The right song creates the right mood. So why stop there?
I’m not talking about editing. I’m talking about everything.
Say you’re finally ready to start querying. Do you listen to some music before you do? Or, feeling a bit timid about sending your new WIP to a beta? Ever put on some hard-driving music to get your blood pumping? To make you feel like you can conquer the world?
After critiques, do you pump yourself back up?
Music, as we know, influences mood. Don’t believe me? Then do this–whatever mood you are in right now, watch this.
Bet you feel better as soon as the song ends. Music influences mood. Most sales people will listen to upbeat music before a big presentation. Athletes before games. So, why do you use that power to help you make your writing better, and not use it to make your sales better?
So next time you’re looking at pitching your book, facing an edit, or simply don’t like your current WIP–get a tune that you know will put a smile on your face. Take a dance break. And get to that next step! Feel free to put your favorite song to shake off the bad vibes in the comments below–I shared mine just up there. And remember, I am J and I am here to PUMP (insert clap here) you up!
