gildedAs a fan of All the Write Notes, I’m thrilled to be sharing with you my playlist for SILVERN, the sequel to GILDED. Music is a huge component for when I’m creating a world for my stories. I love building an atmosphere and a mood through my words so when I write my first drafts, I always have music playing.

Before I even begin to write, one of the pre-planning items I do, besides plotting and character sketches, is create a playlist.

Here are some of the key songs that I listened to while writing SILVERN.

First Class by Henry Jackson from X-Men

cfThe opening scene of Silvern is written to draw the reader right into the story. Jae Hwa is at a Tae Kwon Do belt test, but instead of fighting for marks to get her second degree black belt, she is actually fighting for her life. I wrote chapter one to this song, and in fact, the whole soundtrack for X-Men was perfect to play when writing many of the scenes in the book.

Need You Know by Plumb and Never Alone by Barlow Girl

The relationship between Marc and Jae Hwa definitely develops into that next level where it’s not all starry-eyed and fresh anymore. There are real problems and issues that these two have to face just as all couples do in real life. But through these struggles both Marc and Jae find that they need each other more than they ever did before. These songs represent that.

The Council of Elrond by Enya

2014-08-26 10_18_07Silvern is set in modern day Korea, but there are scenes that are completely fantasy. When Jae Hwa reenters the Spirit World, specifically Haemosu’s lands, there’s a haunting sadness there, and yet a yearning for restoration and healing. This song was perfect to use as I wrote those scenes.

Transformers by Steve Jablonsky

23c5c6aa49c62aadca7381eecfb3b7ebThere are some pretty intense battle scenes in Silvern! Jae Hwa fights dragons, imoogi, creepy cave creautres, gwishins, and weasels from the Underworld to name a few. This music has that epic tone that was perfect for writing those scenes.

Darha Nopigom (Reverently) by Byungki Hwang

I actually have a number of Korean songs and soundtracks that I use for writing the scenes set within Seoul, North Korea, and the countryside. There is a particular scene at a cute herb and garden resort called Herbnara Farm. It’s located in the mountains north of Seoul and this music was playing in the shop. After visiting that place, I knew I had to find some way to fit it into the book because it was just too cool of a setting to not.

May It Be by Enya

This song symbolizes the epilogue at the end of SILVERN. I can’t say much other than this song is a hint of things to come in Gilded #3.

“May It Be”

May it be an evening star
Shines down upon you
May it be when darkness falls
Your heart will be true
You walk a lonely road
Oh! How far you are from home

Mornie utulie (Darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
Mornie alantie (Darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now

May it be the shadow’s call
Will fly away
May it be you journey on
To light the day
When the night is overcome
You may rise to find the sun
