NIL: the tunes behind the words
Hey sweet readers! As y’all know, the crew here at All The Write Notes is made of writers who love music. It’s why we formed this blog in the first place.
For us, music is integral to our writing. And me, I honestly can’t write without it. Sometimes it’s the melody, sometimes it’s the lyrics. Sometimes it’s just the vibe the song conveys, but regardless, I always listen to music as I brainstorm, draft, and revise. (And revise . . . and revise LOL)
As some of y’all know, my debut novel, NIL, comes out next March from Macmillan/Henry Holt (Eep! Less than 7 months away!) and I’m beyond excited about it. (In case you missed it, you can see NIL’s cover AND win an early copy of NIL over at Icey Books. Giveaway has one day left!)
Today I thought I’d share the artists and tracks that fueled my writing. But before I do, here’s a little about NIL itself:
On the mysterious island of Nil, the rules are set. You have exactly 365 days to escape—or you die.
Seventeen-year-old Charley doesn’t know the rules. She doesn’t even know where she is. The last thing she remembers is blacking out, and when she wakes up, she’s naked in an empty rock field.
Lost and alone, Charley finds no sign of other people until she meets Thad, the gorgeous leader of a clan of teenage refugees. Soon Charley learns that leaving the island is harder than she thought . . . and so is falling in love. With Thad’s time running out, Charley realizes that she has to find a way to beat the clock, and quickly.
Think SURVIVOR meets LOST and THE MAZE RUNNER, plus lots of feels. 🙂
Okay, on to the tunes! Since NIL is told from a dual-POV, I had different playlists for each character. First up is Thad’s playlist. He’s been on Nil longer than Charley and it shows. My favorite song on Thad’s playlist? Tough to pick, but probably Watercolor by Pendulum, because I listened to heaps of Pendulum while drafting from Thad’s POV. So here goes:
Next up, Charley’s playlist. Totally different, as it should be. She’s just landed on the island, and everything is scary fresh. My favorite tune on Charley’s playlist? Again, tough to pick. Maybe Blue Jeans by Lana Del Ray. Her whole album got heavy play on Charley’s POV. Here’s Charley’s playlist:
Which tune is your favorite? And do you listen while you write?
Happy listening, and happy reading!
