Every time I make a playlist for a book, it ends up having around 60 or more songs. I’m a music junkie, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. However, when I make official playlists to put on my website for readers, I try to be conservative. I choose the songs that had the biggest impact on my writing, or that played a special role in my characterizations or scenes.

So today I wanted to share three songs that I loved listening to while writing Unhinged, but that didn’t quite make it onto the playlist. I’ll even throw in a few excerpts to make it more interesting. ;)

This first song was one I listened to a lot while in Morpheus’s head. In Unhinged, Morpheus digs his heels in a bit more in regards to winning Alyssa’s affections. This isn’t easy for him, because he’s not exactly comfortable with the emotions Alyssa brings out in the first place. In fact, he’s perplexed by how she makes him feel vulnerable and unbalanced in his own skin, as shown here in an excerpt from The Moth in the Mirror, an e-novella that takes place a few months after Splintered:

She’d only been gone from Wonderland for six months, and he didn’t understand this sick emptiness inside that could only be filled by her touch, her scent, her voice. Solitary fae had no use for such nonsense. They required no companionship, abhorred emotional baggage. Their affection and loyalty belonged to the wilds of Wonderland and to no one or nothing else.

So what had she done to him to change that?

This song goes hand-in-hand with his soul searching as he tries to understand the hold Alyssa has over him:

Gotye – Wonder Why You Want Her
Lost
In her face,
Caught
On the thought of a taste,
Sold
On the fantasy,
Bought,
For a price you can have a piece
Fresh
From the color press,
The flesh
Of today’s princess,
Spread
From end to end,
Blue eyes
And perfect skin
Invite everyone in.
Do you ever wonder why you want her?
Does it even matter you can’t have her?
Even if you tried to it wouldn’t satisfy you

In Unhinged, Alyssa starts to come to terms with some mixed emotions of her own as she begins to unwind some of Morpheus’s layers and sees him in a different light. Here’s an excerpt taken from the book, spotlighting her evolving image of him:

I’m finding it difficult to hold a grudge when he was only trying to show me how strong I really am.

When it’s in fact what he always does.

This next song, though it’s not on the official playlist, perfectly captures the revelations Alyssa encounters in book 2 in regards to Morpheus—who he really is, and his effect on her:

Alanis Morisette – Madness

I’ve been most unwilling to see this turmoil of mine
The thought of sitting with this has me paralyzed
With this prolong exposure to mirror and averted eyes
I’ve feigned that I’ve been waiting: such mileage for empathizing
[Chorus]
And now I see the madness in me is brought out in the presence of you
And now I know the madness lives on, when you’re not in the room
And though I’d love to blame you for all, I’d miss these moments of opportune
You’ve simply brought this madness to light and I should thank you
Oh thank you, much thanks for this bird’s eye view
Oh thank you for your most generous triggers
It’s been all too easy to cross my arms and roll my eyes
The thought of dropping all arms leaves me terrified
[Chorus]
I’d have to give up knowing and give up being right
You inadvertent hero, you angel in disguise
[Chorus]

After Splintered, Alyssa and Jeb have been dating for a year, and their relationship is naturally evolving. In this excerpt from Unhinged, Alyssa contemplates why she doesn’t yet feel ready for the next step, though her reasons are a bit out of the norm:

We’ve discussed taking the next step in our relationship via texts and phone calls, and on occasion in person. Since his schedule is so hectic, we’ve marked prom night on both our calendars… (But) I can’t give him what he wants; not all of me. Not until I tell him who I really am. What I am.

Although Jeb has lost his memory of their time in Wonderland, the trust and intimacy that developed between them while there burns as bright as ever, and this song is a tribute to where they both wish their relationship could go, if only things weren’t so complicated:

Matt Nathanson feat Sugarland – Run
I watch you undress
I wanna watch you glow
Let your hair down
All around, cover us both
You come in waves
We crash and we roll
You surround me, pull me, drown me, swallow me whole
You turn, turn, turn, turning me on
Like a slow fire burn
Know that it’s wrong
Still I run, run, run, run right into you
Yeah, I run, run, run, run right into you
You pull me in close
You buckle my knees
I shake and I shiver just to feel you breathe
You trace my lines
Stirring my soul
Shoot sparks at the heart of the world and I watch it explode (I watch you, I watch you)
You turn, turn, turn, turning me on
Like a slow fire burn
Know that it’s wrong
Still I run, run, run, run right into you
Yeah, I run, run, run, run right into you
I’m pacing
You’re beside me
I am so much more
And I feel your fingers
Pound like thunder
I am so much more
So much more
Turn, turn, turn, turning me on
Like a slow fire burn
Know that it’s wrong
Still I run, run, run, run right into you
Yeah, I run, run, run, run right into you
Turn, turn, turn, turning me on
Like a slow fire burn
Know that it’s wrong
Still I run, run, run, run right into you
Yeah, I run, run, run, run right into you
Still I run, run, run, run right back to you
Turning me on
Like a slow fire burn
